- The biggest problem with PtoP (or multidrop) SCSI networking is that
- so few manufacturers allow the host adapter SCSI IDs to be other than 7.
- If an adapter, addressed at 7, selects 7 on the bus to talk to another
- adapter, the arbitration logic is violated. If you have a host adapter
- that will allow an ID other than 7, it is no more difficult to put IP
- or ISO packets into an SCSI transfer than a serial (SLIP or PPP),
- Ethernet (I believe this may still be a XEROX trademark ((as is XEROX))),
- or shared memory frame. Of course, the host adapters also need to
- support "target mode", but that really is only software, whereas there
- is generally no hardware support for passing IDs. Picture this: I need
- to boot my SCSI hard drive to get an OS up, so I can implement the SCSI
- network. I have to know my adapter's ID to boot the disk, so I can't
- store it on the disk. If I want to boot from the net, I REALLY can't
- use another host adapter's ID, since that machine may already be up.
- This means I have to have jumpers or NVRAM to store the ID and most
- adapters don't have the hardware. It would be possible to change the
- firmware and driver for the A2091s in my Amiga to use jumper 5, which
- has 3 pin positions (labelled options 1, 2, 4, oddly enough) to be
- the SCSI id of the adapter, rather than LUN (SCSI subaddressing) enable,
- STUPID Seagate mode, and "reserved". The SCSI-II spec has definitions
- for networking and CPU devices. IP broadcast is a little ugly, since
- all of the host adapters would have to be individually addressed, but
- it all ought to work.
-
- Does anyone know if there's any RFC for such an animal?
